Free or almost winter family fun!

Looking for fun and exciting things to do with your children in the local area at Christmas?

Well, we’ve got you covered!

Within this blog, we cover lots of things to do that are super cheap or totally free!

1. Bake Christmas cookies

Fill your home with the scent of Christmas cookies baking in the oven! They make great homemade gifts too! Children will develop so many maths skills whilst counting, weighing, measuring and following a recipe. Understanding the world and science are promoted through the opportunity to find out what changes happen to a different mixture of ingredients and cooking.

2. Visit Santa for free in Birmingham

On the 21st, 22nd and 23rd December you could meet Santa and his Elf between 12pm-4pm at Martineau place in centre grotto (more information linked here: Meet Santa Claus for FREE in Birmingham | The Tourist Trail)

3. Take a drive or walk around the local area to see the winter lights

A great opportunity to explore your local community and enjoy the wonder of winter lights on main roads or hidden away in side streets. Children will naturally use mathematical language to describe the colours and shapes they notice on your journey.

4. Make some homemade Christmas cards

This is a wonderful activity to do with any child. Children will enjoy being creative with cutting, sticking and colouring. Recipients will love how individual and personalised they are and just for them.

5. Watch winter films

Snuggle up under a blanket together to watch your favourite winter or christmas films. Children will love feeling secure and having that time to laugh and giggle with you.

6. Listen and dance to Christmas music

Even the youngest of children will enjoy moving their bodies to the music and singing along with you. When children sing, they are using their vocal muscles, this helps them to develop the muscles needed for speaking. Also, singing helps children to develop a good sense of rhythm and pitch, which are important for language development.

7. Build a snowman

If we’re lucky enough to get some snow, you could build a snowman together. Maybe choose a scarf and hat, then see what you can find for the eyes and nose.

8. Read or listen to a Christmas/Winter story

Stick Man is a wonderful story or How to catch a Reindeer. BBC iPlayer have great story adaptations such as Stick Man, The Gruffalo’s child or Room on the Broom. You can also watch stories on Youtube together like The Night Before Christmas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r11gTfoHsuY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbXZBT8wv1w

9. Make paper snowflakes

Children will enjoy developing their cutting skills to make beautiful snowflakes to decorate the tree!

10. Wear pyjamas and play board games

Spending time with family and enjoying the festivities. Board games are a great way to connect as a family, practising new skills and not needing any screens.

11. Receive a letter from Santa!

Receive a letter for your child, choose your design and give them a christmas to remember: https://letterfromsanta.nspcc.org.uk/letter-creation/1
