World Adoption Day

To celebrate World Adoption Day (Tuesday 9th November 2021) we spoke to one of our families brought together by adoption. They chose to share ways in which they feel nursery have supported their specific family…

We built our family through adoption and whilst that does not define our everyday life, it certainly added a layer of complexity to choosing a nursery.

Knowing that Little Hands prides itself on confidentiality was the first thing to put us at ease and be confident that our children would be safe. The team were already knowledgeable around Adverse Childhood Experiences but above everything, they have been open to learn more and to consider different points of view.

Knowing that the nursery have supported adoptive families previously, filled us with warmth that our children are not ‘alone’ in this. The process of supporting us as a family has always been a collaborative one, whereby the nursery seeks out research and resources to celebrate the many ways in which families can be brought together. It’s great to know they have a wide range of stories available for children to explore where their specific family makeup is represented. Furthermore, whenever information has been suggested by us as a family; it has been welcomed with open arms, taken very seriously and applied consistently.

Staff provide sensitivity and love to our children, but this is not because of their circumstances; it’s because they are passionate about working with children and seeing them succeed. Their behaviour management, effective intervention and emotion coaching strategies are already consistently in place and used to support each and every child. These strategies are incredibly inclusive for children with early childhood trauma and so our children don’t need to be treated any differently or receive additional input or strategies.

Our children have had key workers in 0-2, 2-3 and 3-5s and they have all been loving, patient and aware for the benefit of our little explorers. Our decision to choose Little Hands was 100% the right one and we cannot thank the whole team enough!
