For this month’s book club, the children and staff in the Toddler Room at our Amblecote Branch have reviewed ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell.
“’Dear Zoo’ supports children’s emerging language as it has repetitive phrases for them to repeat aloud with staff and their peers. The characters in the story are animals which our children are currently very interested in. The story continues to support children’s speech and language through the use of sounds, repetition of phrases and rhyming. The story gives children the opportunity to talk about their own experiences of living with pets or visiting the zoo or safari park. At nursery we have the soft book version of ‘Dear Zoo’, but it is also available in a hard back, which is useful as it has folding doors inside. The pages are easy to turn and the ‘lift the flap’ doors can be folded either forwards or backwards. The story builds on children’s previous learning well as it can be extended by using ‘mystery bags’ and ‘trial and error’ activities. Overall, our children gave this story a 4 out of 5 star rating.”
